Ten years ago, after a career in Education and IT, I restarted a creative practice. Initially this was primarily through printmaking, encouraged by my association with Ochre Print Studios in Surrey where I undertook a year’s residency in 2019.

 

After a move to Oxfordshire in 2021 I started an MFA at Oxford Brookes, finishing in 2024. I commenced a part-time MPhil/PhD research project at Oxford Brookes in January 2025.

My MPhil/PhD research project is concerned with Aphantasia, a term coined in 2015 to describe the inability to visualise, i.e. to have no visual imagery in one’s “mind’s eye”. 

 

I am particularly interested in how Aphantasia affects the creative process and how this may inform understanding of the wider implications of being Aphantasic regarding perception, time and memory.

 

In the current phase of the project, I am using my printmaking practice to explore some of the general assumptions made around Aphantasia and art, alongside other internal and external stimuli to creativity. My work explores making as an activity hovering between the internal world without mental imagery and the extended mind and external world, informed by concepts, instructions, constraints and random elements.
